When should I start reading my baby a bedtime story?

Right now! It is never too early to read to your baby. We started reading to our daughters when they were newborns and they are both huge book lovers to this day. We read to them all day long (what else is there to do with your new baby anyway?) and always included it as part of our bedtime routine. Our book of choice was The Going to Bed Book by Sandra Boynton, a short and sweet rhyming book that soothes little ones. And reading the same book each nap time and bed time helped cue that sleep time was coming.

Just as it is never too early to read to your baby, it is never too early to start implementing a bedtime routine! When they’re really little, bedtime (and nap time) routines don’t need to be anything more elaborate than:

  • diaper change

  • turn on the white noise machine

  • read 1 or 2 books

  • sing a lullaby

  • say good night and leave the room

Sounds great right? If your baby is over 4 months old and this sounds so far from your reality of trying to put your baby to bed, contact me to see how I can help you and your baby sleeping better!
